Generation Gap?
When we first began our traveling ministry in '74, a student came up to me and said he liked our music. He added, "Your record is the only one my dad will let me turn up." I thought at the time how cool it was that parents and kids could both listen to our music at the same time at the same volume level and both be able to enjoy it.
Fast forward nearly forty years and we find that often a church will find something else for the youth to do during our concerts. I guess the white hair scares them off. Consequently, I found the letter we received today quite interesting. It is from a grade-school or perhaps middle school girl who attended our concert last Sunday night. I thought I would share excerpts from the letter with you.
Dear Ron and Haven,
Thank you for coming to sing at our church. You both did a good job. Plus your duets were beautiful together. During some of your songs I started singing because I felt like it and I got the hang of it. . . . . .I wrote this in my memory book so I will never forget you guys. I took a card where the CD's were so I could have a picture to put in my memory book and to write you guys a letter. You guy's voices were like angels sing[ing] in heaven. . . . . .You guys were awesome!
So, I guess we can still relate to the kids. There were a number of folks at the concert Sunday who first heard us when they were kids and one gal posted the following on her Facebook page after the concert:
I heard Ron & Haven perform in both the Havensville & Soldier Christian Churches throughout my childhood, so tonight really had me reminiscing. More of the wonderful history that I grew up with that made me who I am today, for which I am so very grateful! Thanks Ron & Haven for the great music and wonderful memories!
It is interesting how many churches claim to be mulit-generational while separating all the different generations into different groups that rarely worship together or even function together. I'm just glad we have the opportunity from time to time to sing to all ages because the message is the same for everyone.
